My greatest
value to my clients is the work we do together to solve their problems.
Sometimes that work leads to tangible information systems - here
are a few examples:
Student
information system
I designed and implemented
a custom integrated database management system for a Massachusetts
private school. The multi-user system, written in Visual FoxPro,stores
and manages admissions information (including unlimited addresses),
student schedules, grades and test scores, professional contacts,
and student attendance. Over five hundred different data items are
stored in the database. The system is e-mail enabled, so that appropriate
users can be notified when certain events, e.g. the acceptance of
a new student, occur. A large number of built-in reports provide
comprehensive information to the administrative departments, and
an integrated report generator allows custom reports to be created
by the staff, when needed.
Customized
accounting software
A fast-growing Vermont manufacturer required a large number of custom
changes to their accounting software. Many of the facilities they
required were not available in any standard accounting package.
A few examples of the new functionality I implemented include: linking
their accounting software to UPS Worldship; adding global customer
notes that are time and operator stamped when a new order is entered,
providing extensive reporting based on customer territories and
ship-to location for national customers with multiple stores.
Video
disk controller software
HarperCollins required
Macintosh based software to control the display of over 4,500 images
and video clips on a video disk used to accompany one of their best-selling
Anatomy and Physiology text books. I wrote the controller software.
As the videodisk player displays still or video material (some in
3D), the software provides information about what is being seen.
The software also provides search capabilities, so that specific
items can quickly be found.
